Likes Tweets and Follows - What Do They Mean If Anything

In keeping with my Social Media theme from my last blog post, I was having this conversation with a friend the other day. I guess in some sense of the question, sure those social media keywords do mean something. My friend couldn’t get his head around the fact that people get so excited when they get these “Likes” from other people on Facebook or get “followed” on Twitter. He seems to think they are worth about as much as a $3 bill.

Yes these buzz words can mean there are people seeing your work and you are reaching a wider audience. As far as translating to $ well I guess that’s a whole other ball of wax. The real question is, what do they mean to the individual?

Let’s face it, as artists we do this because of our love for the craft but we are also not doing this for the good of our health. We want to make money. Who doesn’t? For some I am sure the money is not the be all and end all to our love for art.

Does the admiration and love of our work by our family members and peers equate to money? I would say no it doesn’t but it could by way of referrals and word of mouth and that is great inexpensive marketing.
